Hyperbole

Hyperbole

Hyperbole, derived from a Greek word of meaning "over-casting," is a figure of speech that involves an exaggeration of ideas for the sake of emphasis. it is the opposite of understatement.

E.g of Hyperbole:
  1. In everyday use:

Euphemism

EUPHEMISM

A polite expression used in a place of words of phrases that might otherwise be considered harsh or unpleasant. These phrases are used regularly, and there are many examples of euphemism in everyday language.

E.g in everyday life:
  • He is a special child (disabled or learning challenged)
E.g in literature:
  • Animal Farm (By George Orwell).
"for the time being," he explains, "it had been found necessary to make a readjustment of rations."

substituting the word "reduction" for "readjustment" was an attempt to supress the complaints of other animals about hunger. it works because reductions means "cutting" the food supply, while readjustment implies changing the current amount of food.

Function of Euphemism:
  • Helps writers convey those ideas that have become a social taboo, and are too embarassing to mention directly. writers skillfully choose appropiate words refer to and discuss a subject indirectly that otherwise might not published due to strict social censhorship, such as for reasons of religious fanaticism, political theories, sexuality, and death.
